Communication, BA

Communication, the process of exchanging information, has been the essence of humanity for thousands of years. A degree in Communication is especially suitable for people who enjoy working with other people across a wide variety of fields and organizations - and who desire to learn to communicate effectively and express themselves with clarity. Students pursuing a degree in Communication prepare themselves for a broad range of employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

The General Communication track allows students to prepare for a career in communication with courses tailored to the individual student’s interests and career objectives. Additional tracks are listed below and allow for more specialization. The Communication BA may also be completed as an online degree.

General Requirements

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication requires the following:

  • A minimum of 39 credit hours of COMM course work. At least 18 of those hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher).
  • At least 30 hours of COMM courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
  • A minimum 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all COMM course work.
  • No more than 60 credit hours of COMM course work may apply to the bachelor’s degree.
  • All graduating Communication majors must submit an ePortfolio before graduation. See the COMM department website for specific details.

Communication Major Options

The following options, or tracks, may be added to the Communication major. Options may have different course and hour requirements.  See below for more information.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate proficiency in public speaking.
  • Students will demonstrate competence in writing skills.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge, and appropriate application of various communication theories as related to their specific track.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge, and appropriate application of communication research methodologies and associated analysis tools. 
  • Students will demonstrate the skills to communcicate effectively using moving pictures and sounds (applicable to Digital Filmmaking majors only).

Departmental Honors

To qualify for departmental honors in Communication, students must have a GPA of 3.75 in their COMM coursework at UCCS and an overall GPA of 3.5. Students who qualify for departmental honors will be contacted by the Department of Communication after they complete their senior audit. Those who choose to take the honors examination will then be eligible to graduate with departmental honors and to be nominated as the Outstanding Student in the Social Sciences at UCCS.
