History and Philosophy Double Major

History requires 36 total credit hours for its major, while Philosophy requires 30 total credit hours.
Both History and Philosophy require a Senior Thesis of all its majors, so students will be able to choose in which department to complete their Senior Thesis requirement (but will not need to do both).
History will wave 6 credit hours of its 36 required credit hours for double-major.

History’s Degree Requirements:

The Bachelor of Arts degree in history requires 36 semester hours with grades of C or above; a maximum of 54 hours can be applied to the degree. At least 21 out of the 30 hours must be upper division courses.

SIX (6) of those hours in upper-division courses must come from the list of courses designated as Global History courses. Please see the History Advising sheet for a complete list of the courses that fulfill Global History requirement at the upper-division level. All of the courses that fulfill the Global History requirement in the major also fulfill the General Education “Inclusiveness” requirement.

SENIOR THESIS (HIST 4990): The History Department’s “capstone” experience is a Senior Thesis, required of all History majors, and done under the close supervision in a class (History 4990) taught by one of our regular faculty members or Instructors. In the Senior Thesis class, students will prepare a full-length (usually 25-30 pages) essay on a selected topic in History, relying heavily on original or primary sources.
