WEST 4170 - The Empire Strikes Back: Postcolonial Theory & Practice3 Credits (Minimum) 3 Credits (Maximum)
Approached from an historical perspective, this course is designed to introduce students to critical issues in Postcolonial Studies. Throughout the semester we will consider the manner in which colonized nations and cultures have been inscribed by Western thought and discourse, and how a range of authors and artists from previously colonized nations have revised or re-inscribed these narratives to create and include their own perspectives and experiences. Course materials will focus on the various ways that culture and the idea of nationhood has been articulated, theorized and defined, and the manner in which identity has been conceptualized in terms of intertwined categories such as race, class, and gender, sexuality, disability, etc. Approved for LAS Global Awareness requirement. Meets with HIST 3910.
