Teacher Education and Licensure Program (TELP)

The Teacher Education and Licensure Program (TELP) includes a one-year intensive, full-time program, known as the Professional Year, that leads to recommendation for teacher licensure from the State of Colorado. Undergraduate students seeking a baccalaureate degree select a major from the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences and fulfill the requirements for both the BA and licensure. Candidates who have already earned a baccalaureate degree will apply for the Licensure Only option with the opportunity to apply nine credits toward the MA in Curriculum and Instruction. The undergraduate and post-baccalaureate programs have their own admission processes beyond the admission requirements of the University.
TELP leads to an initial teaching license in the State of Colorado. Post-baccalaureate students have the option to take three of the four core classes at the graduate level and apply them to an MA in Curriculum & Instruction within a five-year period. Undergraduates, however, cannot use those credits toward both their BA degree and their MA degree.
There are two separate strands of licensure for both undergraduates and post-baccalaureate students: elementary and secondary. The course requirements for the two strands differ and are listed on our website.

Undergraduate Program Requirements
Licensure requires 42 hours in addition to an undergraduate major. Undergraduate students seeking a bachelor’s degree select an approved major and fulfill the requirements for both the bachelor’s degree and licensure. UCCSTeach Option: Students interested in pursuing secondary Math or Science participate in UCCSTeach, enabling them to complete a degree that meets the requirements of both their Math or Science major and licensure requirements of Colorado. Undergraduate Content Requirements In the State of Colorado, at the undergraduate level, one must earn a content major along with fulfilling licensure requirements. UCCS students may choose one of the following: Elementary | Secondary | Biology | *Biology | English (pre-licensure) | *Chemistry | Geography | English (pre-licensure) | History | History | Spanish | *Math | | Spanish (K-12 certification) | *Note: Secondary Science and Math majors meet licensure requirements through the UCCSTeach Program. Recommended Sequence Complete all core courses with a B- or better. Core Courses (17-20 credit hours) *3 credit hours of TED 3010 are required. Each credit hour earned requires 30 hours of school experience. Post-baccalaureate students with extensive experience teaching and working in a school setting may petition the Director of Teacher Education for a waiver of 1 of the 3 credit hours. 2 credit hours of TED 3010 will be granted by successful completion of the Teacher Cadet Program. Candidates who already have a bachelor’s degree will apply for the licensure-only option. Licensure requires 45 credit hours with the option of applying 9 of those hours toward a general Master of Arts in Curriculum. UCCSTeach Option: Candidates interested in secondary Math or Science join UCCSTeach to complete their licensure requirements for Colorado. See last section of this page. The UCCSTeach program at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs is an inquiry-based teacher licensure program for students focused on secondary mathematics and science education. The UCCSTeach program prepares future middle school and high school math and science teachers in cooperation with academic content area departments. Currently those academic content area departemtns are Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, and Engineering Education. The UCCSTeach program is collaboratively housed between the College of Education and the College of Letters, Arts and Science, with co-directors from the College of Education and the College of Letters, Arts and Science. Students receive a Bachelor’s Degree in their content area and a secondary teaching certification in Science or Mathematics. Students who already have an appropriate bachelor’s degree can choose to participate in the program to obtain certification as post-baccalaureates. The UCCSTeach program, like all UTeach replication sites, is built on strong research-based foundations. Several hallmarks of our program are: - We provide our students with early and repeated teaching opportunities. Students are encouraged to start our program as first semester freshmen. They take a one-credit class, which exposes them to important ideas about teaching, and they get to teach several lessons in an elementary school setting. There is no better to truly understand teaching than to stand up and teach in front of a classroom full of students, and our students experience that right away.
