Degree Programs
The Department of Mathematics at UCCS offers a wide range of courses, degrees, and programs to meet the needs of a diverse constituency in the Pikes Peak Region. The degree programs include a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics (including a secondary teaching option), Bachelor of Science in Mathematics , Master of Science in Applied Mathematics , and Mathematics Ph.D. through the Ph.D. in Applied Science of the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences.
Mathematics and mathematics teaching options are also available through the Letters, Arts, and Sciences Master of Sciences Degree Program (MSc) offered through the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences.
The department offers minors in both Mathematics and Statistics and supports a concentration in Actuarial Science. In addition, the department supports the Certificate Program in Industrial Mathematics .
Mathematics Learning Center
The Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) is located in the EAS Building. The MLC began operation in the fall of 1990 as part of a federally funded Title III initiative known as Project Excel. The Math Learning Center provides drop-in mathematics tutoring for students, supports the individualized mathematics courses offered through the Extended Studies program, and provides computer access to mathematical software. As the role of computer technology in the classroom continues to grow, so too does the importance of the MLC as a vital student resource.
Mathematics Academic Policies
Prerequisite Policy
For the courses Math 1040, 1050, 1110, 1120, and 1350, students must meet the entrance requirements for the course. For all other courses, listed prerequisites are advisory only. If a student has not achieved a passing grade in a listed prerequisite course, the student must demonstrate that he/she possesses an appropriate level of competence in the prerequisite topics before enrolling in the subsequent course. Such students must satisfactorily complete a Math Placement Exam. Students enrolled in any one of the courses Math 1040, 1050, 1110, 1120, 1350 who have not met either the course prerequisite or the exam prerequisite by the second week of the semester must disenroll from the course.
Students who are interested in enrolling in any of Math 1040, 1050, 1110, 1120, or 1350 are strongly encouraged to take the appropriate placement exam well before the start of the semester, for pedagogical, advising and administrative purposes. Calculator Policy
Calculator usage on exams is limited to a basic scientific calculator with a minimal number of storage registers and no graphing capability.
