SOC 4590 - Youth Gangs

A sociological examination of youth gangs. Factors related to formation and maintenance of youth deviant culture in different historical periods. The social construction of gangs, gang resistance to social control, and criminalization of youth of color. Structural, community and neighborhood influences. Approved for Compass Curriculum requirement: Inclusiveness (Global/Diversity). Prer., SOC 3070; coreq., SOC 3150 or consent of instructor. Meets with WEST 3490.
